The letter from Martin Bell and others (April 21) gives great credibility to the anti-war candidate possibly winning in Sedgefield. Is there any evidence that such a possibility exists? Or is this just part of a bandwagon campaign? Constituency-based democracy means that if sufficient resources were
committed, it is conceivable the prime minister could be unseated by
selective targeting. But if such tactics were to succeed, it would only be
a victory for political vandalism. All it would show is how easily local
inertia can be manipulated by well-organised outsiders. Hard to see how Mr
Bell could welcome this as "a positive result on the future of our
democracy". Mike Allott Chandlers Ford, Hants |
